ABSTRACT

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is an initiative to promote heightened recovery of patients undergoing surgery to reduce complications and promote earlier return to normal activities. Learn how the ERAS pathway was developed and improved, including patient identification, standardized patient education, nursing care plans, patient nutrition, pain management, fluid therapy, and early ambulation. The ERAS pilot done on colorectal surgery patients not only limited in-hospital opioid use but also reduced post-discharge opioid prescriptions. Due to its success, the ERAS program was expanded to include cardiothoracic, thoracic, and urology surgical services
