After twelve years of facilitating cultures of improvement for industries ranging from military to manufacturing, I’ve seen my fair share of bumps in the road. We’ve certainly navigated the wrong way at understanding a problem or taken some wrong turns at solutions. Moreover, the map we used may have been a little too high-level and didn’t really help navigate us through the intricacies of effective sustained problem solving. More often we just wanted to use the tools such as 5S, Fishbone Diagrams, and/or Value-Stream Mapping without truly understanding what or why. All these wrong turns and traffic jams at moving our culture forward has led to my recognition that we needed a GPS. This GPS would serve as guidance; to fact-check we were on the right track, solving the right problems, the right way. No longer tools for the sake of tools, but true problem solving aimed at continuous and sustained improvement. So, come take a journey with me as I show you some of the mis-routings we made along our journey, and how this GPS has helped me to facilitate cultures of continuous improvement regardless of industry.
