MEM Program Director, Abu Dhabi University, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Barry has over 30 years of experience in planning, managing, and developing major capital projects. He has worked as a senior administrator with various public sector organizations and has been responsible for leading the planning, design and construction of major capital projects for the Calgary Health Region (now Alberta Health Services) and the University of Calgary.

Hospital processes must transform in order to improve quality, eliminate waste and improve flow between components of the healthcare system so as to create hospitals that are patient centered, adaptable, integrative, and sustainable. This can be accomplished by closely integrating Lean operational planning and continuous process improvement with facility planning and design.

Barry is an accomplished practitioner of lean methodology and has led numerous workshops including 3P workshops value stream mapping (VSM) and rapid improvement workshops (RIW) based on optimizing the flow of patients, clinicians, information, medication equipment and supplies.

As a Senior Principal with Stantec, Barry has led the development of lean driven service delivery and facility planning for numerous health care clients across Canada including Newfoundland Department of Health and Community Services, Fraser Health Authority and the Government of the North West Territories.

Conference Chair's Message

Joel Smith

Continuous Improvement is not just something a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) practitioner leads their organization in practicing, but is also a core competency of their professional makeup. That is why more and more innovative and leading companies are looking for leaders that use the LSS way of thinking in everything they do within their organization.

In this era of data science and machine learning, the ability to connect the dots for end to end solutions across the boundaries of people, process and systems is the key to success. This year’s conference is focused on making sure we are “continuing” our journey as practitioners. Whatever your level of experience, you will learn new concepts, new perspectives and network with the best in the industry.
