This talk is for people who are leading transformations in their company and are struggling to increase momentum. Start advancing your transformation tomorrow with these tips. Adam uses nearly two decades of observed transformation mistakes and the countermeasures used to breakthrough organizational politics and stalling. Leadership is always the number one failure mode of transformation but there are nuances underneath that can be major contributors. I rescope issues based on the authority of the highest leader fully bought in. I've gathered the top issues I've found leading transformations internally and as a consultant.

Each topic would have examples, symptoms, characteristics and how to address them.

Not Tied to Key Strategy - Side Initiative or Pet Project. Isn’t regularly discussed among leadership. “I support this ______ initiative email & town hall announcement then it’s radio silence afterward. Next important series of meetings, it isn’t even brought up.

”Leaders expect others to just ’go do it’ and don’t want to be “touched” themselves. Don’t want to be in the trenches. Incentives (acknowledgements, promotions, bonuses) aren’t aligned with the transformation and remain same as before.

There isn’t a way to know/see if transformation is leading to improvement. No visible scoreboard allowing antibodies to stay while suppressing promoters is the #1 failure of leaders.

Assume technology will fix “it” Often adds significant workload with side benefit of having “digital record”.

Not Enough Dedicated Staff Full time FTEs required. No Internal Expertise. One leader tries to do as a side job. Hire an expert.
